The Clayton Avenue / Buckle Avenue Pond at Cleator Moor was a former Quarry. Nearby, there was a Lime Kiln. The kiln was used to produce quicklime through the calcination of limestone. Kilns were quite common in the area.
Limestone has numerous uses: as a building material, an essential component of concrete, as aggregate for the base of roads, as white pigment or filler in products such as toothpaste or paints, as a chemical feedstock for the production of lime, as a soil conditioner, or as a popular decorative addition to rock gardens.
My Dad Tom lived at 26 Clayton Avenue, prior to moving to Mill Hill. In 1957, his dog Prince was found floundering in the pond. He was rescued and laid out on an old coat on a bank near the water's edge to keep him warm and to help aid recovery from his ordeal. But, for some unknown reason Prince decided to go for another swim in the murky depths and unfortunately drowned at aged 14.
The hazardous pond was filled in, during the 1960's/70's after a number of incidents involving the local community.

Do you know if the Kelly family lived at 26 Clayton Avenue in 1962?
ReplyDeleteThe following is a list of residents from 1954. I don't have any other information to hand. Sorry.
