Little Ireland was launched on 27th August 2019, combined with the re-release of Cleator Moor Revealed - a book written by my Dad, Tom Duffy.
My Dad first launched a website back in the year 2000. On his website, he gave a write up on events that have occurred in Cleator Moor over the decades. Much of the material was transcribed over to Little Ireland, and is available here. New content is added when time permits.
Dad was born in Cleator Moor, as was his Father and Grandfather before him. The family had come over to the town from Avoca in County Wicklow around 1870. They appear in the census for Cleator Moor in 1871.
They had come over to Cleator Moor looking for employment in the Iron Ore Mines and what was the Ainsworths Linen Mills at Cleator. It was said that one of the reasons the Irish settled in the town was because it reminded them so much of the places they had come from, with the hills and the lakes very similar to the Irish countryside around Wicklow.
- With the passing of my Dad on January 28th, 2023 (aged 85), this site is dedicated to him and his endeavours to share the history of Cleator Moor with the world.
I hope you enjoy your visit.
Sean Duffy.
