One of the longest serving families that have had the distinction of serving the public, behind the bar of the New Crown, was the McMullen Family. Jack and Ellen McMullen took over the tenancy in 1926. Jack continued this tenancy until in 1956, when he retired, Hartley Breweries had no hesitation to hand over the reins at the New Crown to his son, Danny and his wife Winnie, who's stewardship of the New Crown lasted until 1981 – this was a period of 55 years for the McMullen family as publicans in the New Crown.
- The photo of the New Crown from C1920 is really interesting. Perhaps the men (and some boys) have popped in for a drink after work, or are maybe heading up to the Bowling Green at Crossfield - is the guy third from the left carrying his woods, or bait? Some appear to be in their finery - maybe they've popped into the pub before heading up to St. John's for mass? Some are also wearing scarves - maybe Cleator Moor Celtic were playing that day?
