Grey Seals arrive at South Walney - hopes are high for seal pups

The grey seal pup season is about to take place at the South Walney Nature Reserve. This will be the sixth year that seal pups will have been born in the colony.

The seals have begun to arrive on the beach, and can be seen via live webcam

The highest number of pups born was in 2017, when 10 pups were recorded.

A spokesperson from Cumbria Wildlife Trust said: "Baby seals are incredibly vulnerable to disturbance, which would cause the mother to abandon it and the pup to starve, so there is no access to the area of the nature reserve where the seals are located. However, you can spot adult seals playing in the water at high tide, along with thousands of wintering wildfowl and wader birds, from hides elsewhere on the nature reserve."

The grey seal is a large seal, commonly referred to as 'earless seals'. Record-sized bull grey seals can reach about 3.3 m (10 ft 10 in) in length.

Entry for members is free/Non-members are charged £3.00 for adults and £1.00 for children – all monies are used to help manage the nature reserve.
