Eden Council extends free car parking to end of December

SHARE:

Eden District Council has announced that it’s extending the suspension of parking charges at most of its off-street parking locations until the end of December 2020.

The original decision to offer free parking was taken in March, as lockdown measures were being announced by the government. Parking charges were due to start again from the end of September, but with high streets across Eden now open again, it’s hoped the extended offer of free parking at the Council’s off-street car parks, excluding the car parks at the side of the Town Hall and to the rear of Mansion House in Penrith where normal charging and parking enforcement resumed at the end of August, will encourage residents and visitors back into the district’s towns in support of local businesses.

Eden District Council’s Services Portfolio Holder, Cllr. Mike Tonkin, said: “The suspension of parking charges at most of our off-street parking locations has proved to be a popular gesture with residents and visitors, alike.

“The Council is keen to support local businesses as they recover from the weeks of trading lost during the government’s Covid-19 lockdown. We hope that by extending free parking to the end of December, we can encourage people to think, visit and shop locally.”

It’s also been confirmed that the council’s annual parking permit holders will receive an automatic extension to the end of December on their existing permits, where applicable.

Residents and visitors are reminded that Cumbria County Council has resumed parking enforcement activities for on-street parking in Eden and that it’s always best to check local parking enforcement arrangements before travelling.
