Door staff spat at in Whitehaven

Cumbria Police say that they are aware of three incidents involving door staff being spat at whilst at work in licensed premises in Whitehaven.  This issue has been raised by Whitehaven Pubwatch.

A spokesperson for Cumbria Police said: "On 3 September 2020 police were called following two staff members being spat at in the Whittington Cat public house in Lowther Street, Whitehaven.

"Alex Crellin, a 20 year old local man, was arrested and charged with two counts of common assault and one count of disorderly behaviour following this incident.  He will appear in court on 02 October 2020.

"On 18 September 2020 police were called to the Packhorse public house in Lowther Street Whitehaven where door staff had been spat at by a female. A police investigation is continuing."

Whitehaven Pubwatch facilitates scheme members to easily communicate and quickly circulate Pubwatch information with the aim of tackling crime and anti-social behaviour.

Pubwatch protects staff and customers, preserves and improves valuable trade and fosters good working relationships with the Police, Local Authorities and the courts.  They also demonstrate to these authorities and the local community the social responsibility of the licensed trade.

Sergeant David Macdonald of Copeland Neighbourhood Policing Team said:
“Multi-agency partner initiatives such as the Whitehaven Pubwatch scheme aim to ensure everyone can socialise safely.  Cumbria Constabulary will continue to make the message very clear: anti-social and violent behaviour will not be tolerated.”

“The current pandemic has made life difficult for a great number of people, licensees and patrons alike, but this will never be an excuse for anyone to conduct themselves inappropriately and we will work tirelessly with Whitehaven Pubwatch and partners to ensure that these individuals are excluded from our licensed premises for the safety of all.  Having the support of and working alongside Licensees and bar staff and of course patrons themselves, allows the local economy to flourish in addition to ensuring everyone enjoys their evenings out in a safe environment.”
