Copeland Virtual Skills Fair 2020


Industry experts, employment advisors and the Government’s skills minister came together to offer career and training advice as part of Copeland Skills Fair 2020. 

The virtual event, hosted by Copeland MP Trudy Harrison, aimed to connect local people with education, training and career opportunities across a range of sectors including, agriculture, events planning, marketing and health. 

Companies including West Cumbria Mining, North Cumbria Integrated Care Trust, Lake District Hotels, and Lakes College took part in the five day event which included webinars and video interviews focusing on a specific industries each day. 

Leading up to the virtual fair, Mrs Harrison also hosted a career’s A-Z on her social media platforms, speaking with business owners and industry professionals to gain an insight into their chosen career paths. 

Trudy, said: “Every year I am super proud to showcase the exciting job and training opportunities of offer here in Copeland, but this year, due to Covid, we had to do things slightly different. 

“Despite the occasional technical challenge, the event was a fabulous success and I would like to say a big thank you to all the businesses, industry experts and careers advisors who took part in this year’s skills fair, without you, it could not have gone ahead.” 

As part of the event, apprenticeship and skills minister, Gillian Keegan MP joined a webinar session with leading career management and personal development organisation Inspira, speaking about her responsibilities within the Department for Education and her journey into work. 

The fair also provided a discussion with business owners on the ins and outs of being self employed. 

Owner of Platinum Live, Oliver Hodgson, who would like to see more local people explore Cumbria’s events industry as a career, said: “It was a pleasure to be involved in the virtual skills fair, it’s always important to share and give a platform to the industries that people don’t often consider working in, especially in West Cumbria were industry surrounds us all. 

“The event world is a fantastic and ever changing sector, it would be great to see more Cumbrians taking part in the great industry it is.”
