Furness Coastguard were tasked this morning at 0412 to reports of a person in the water at Jubilee Bridge, Walney.
Once on scene the team located the casualty clinging on to a stanchion underneath Jubilee Bridge.
A spokesperson from the Coastguard said:
"Working alongside Cumbria Police, Barrow Fire Station and North West Ambulance Service the JESIP team decided to wait until Barrow Lifeboat arrived on scene to rescue to casualty, who was only minutes away.
"During this time, the casualty had lost grip and was struggling in the water. At this point two Coastguard Rescue Water Technicians swam out into Walney Channel to the casualty and brought them back to safety and placed in the care of NWAS.
"A well worked incident with a very positive ending from what could have been a tragic outcome."
