M6 Northbound is closed between J38 and J39 due to a serious incident

The M6 in Cumbria is closed northbound between J36 Crooklands Interchange (South Lakes, Kendal, Barrow A590 (A591), Kirkby Lonsdale, Skipton A65) and J39 Shap Interchange (Shap A6) due to serious collision between J38 Tebay Interchange (Brough A685, Appleby B6260) resulting in an overturned vehicle and serious injuries.

Cumbria Police are on scene along with Fire & Rescue, Paramedics and Highways England Traffic Officers. It is expected the road will remain closed for an extended period of time. The closure has been implemented from J36 to allow access to the most suitable diversion route around the incident.

A Police spokesperson said: "The M6 is likely to be closed for sometime. The diversion route is off at J36 taking the A6 north and re-joining at J39, M6."

Southbound traffic is currently being held to allow the air ambulance to attend this incident. Once the air ambulance has departed southbound traffic will be released.

A spokesperson from Highways England said: "Road users caught within the closure please remain with your vehicle and await instructions from on-scene Highways England Traffic Officers or Cumbria Police officers. Every effort will be made to get you out of the closure as soon as practicably possible."

A diversion is available. Traffic exiting at J36 should follow the route marked out on local road signs with a hollow diamond symbol. This will take traffic via the A590 westbound to the Brettargh Holt junction. Join the A591 and follow it to the Plumgarths Roundabout. Take the third exit on to the A5284. Follow the A5284 Windermere Road/Stricklandgate and the follow the road left on to the A6 Sandes Avenue. Follow the A6 northbound out of Kendal to the Shap Toll Bar junction. Turn right on to the B6261 and rejoin the M6 north at J39.

Road users wishing to join the M6 north from J37 and J38, should plan ahead and use alternative local roads to get to J39.

The incident is expected to be clear around 1am.
