Emergency services attended a house fire on Ehen Road in Cleator Moor at 07:52 this morning (16 July). The Great North Air Ambulance was alerted at 8.30am and attended the scene, from their Langwathby base.
Residents were advised to avoid the area.
A spokesperson for Cumbria Police said that: "A man, aged 40, was taken by air ambulance to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle following the fire. He is in a serious condition.
"Officers will work with Cumbria Fire and Rescue service to investigate the cause of the fire. It is not thought to be suspicious at this time."
A spokesperson from Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said:
"Fire engines from Whitehaven and Frizington attended a fire involving a bedroom of a semi-detached domestic property on Ehen Road, Cleator Moor.
"One casualty was rescued from the property by fire service personnel suffering from burns and smoke inhalation and handed over to ambulance crews.
"Firefighters used two hose reels, four breathing apparatus, a triple extension ladder and a positive pressure ventilation unit to bring the fire under control. Crews were on scene for 2 hours."
