At approximately 11am, appliances from Carlisle East and Carlisle West, were mobilised to reports of an explosion on Petteril Bank Road, Carlisle.
A spokesperson from Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said:
"In attendance, crews discovered that there had been an underground explosion, which had lifted the pavement slabs, and scattered debris.
"Crews ascertained that the explosion was probably caused by an underground electric cable, and Electricity North West were called, who confirmed this. We left the incident in the hands of their engineers.
