Special Schools to close

SHARE:

Cumbria County Council have written to parents to inform them that Special Schools across the county are to close. The closure will affect Mayfield School in Whitehaven.

Dan Barton, assistant director of education said:

"I write in relation to the ongoing situation caused by the spread of Covid-19. As you know, our Special Schools have worked very hard since the beginning of the outbreak to remain open. Doing so has enabled families to continue to rely on the support and quality education which our schools provide. However, there is an added vulnerability of the cohort of young people attending Special Schools, as you know. Furthermore, the impact on the ability of those schools to stay open safely given the increasing numbers of teachers now safe-isolating means that we must now take a pro-active decision to close.

"We have decided to recommend, therefore, that all Cumbrian Special Schools plan to close at the end of the day tomorrow, Wednesday 18th March. This will give families time to plan for the school closure, at the same time as taking the necessary and responsibly steps to close."

Sam Kidd, Headteacher of Mayfield School said:

"We will be closed from 3.00 p.m. on Wednesday 18th March.

"There are no known cases (of Coronavirus) at the school at present, however we have growing numbers of students and staff self-isolating either as a precaution or showing symptoms.

"This is a county wide led decision from the Local Authority. As always, our students' needs are the key drivers for any decisions we make and we want to keep them safe.

"We will be open as usual tomorrow - Wednesday 18th March 2020. This is to enable families to prepare for students being at home as of Thursday 19' March. If you would like us to send home gait trainers etc please contact school tomorrow, after which school will be completely closed.

"Because we are unsure of the length of closure we will also be sending home medication tomorrow.

"We will keep you fully informed of when we are likely to reopen for students via teacher2parents text, twitter (emayfieldschool) or dojo. There will be updates on the school website www.mayfield.cumbria.sch.uk or you can email adminemayfield.cumbria.sch.uk.
"The school office will be closed but emails are being monitored.

"If you would like to keep your child at home tomorrow we will support your decision. As ever our thoughts are with all of our school community at this difficult time."

Emma Jackson, Headteacher of St. Benedict's said:

"We are aware that Mayfield School are closing from tomorrow. Mayfield have been advised by the local authority to close, as they have many vulnerable pupils.

"At present we will remain open until we are advised otherwise, or until our staffing ratios become untenable."
