Additional CCTV cameras for Maryport

Cumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Peter McCall working alongside Maryport town council and the police, announces additional CCTV cameras for the existing network in the town centre.

The new cameras in Phase 2 of CCTV come as a result of the Commissioner listening to feedback from local people, councils and Cumbria Constabulary.   After further consideration following on from the announcement of the proposed new cameras locations in January, a decision has been made to increase the original offer made to Maryport. The additional cameras will enable the council to locate CCTV equipment that has the capacity to capture comprehensive images of the complete town centre.

Police and Crime Commissioner, Peter McCall comments: “I am delighted to be working with Maryport council to develop the next stage of CCTV and that the additional two cameras, taking Maryport's total up to three, will enable the complete town centre to be monitored, thereby improving safety of local residents.

“I often talk about ‘we not they’ and this is clear evidence of local communities working with us for a really successful solution for our people.

“This is a significant step forward in tackling crime and anti-social behaviour in the town.  Unfortunately, I can’t put a police officer on every street corner but this investment is a massive progression and will go a long way to improve people’s confidence.

“I would like to thank Maryport council for coming forward and working with us in this innovative approach that once again proves Cumbria is leading the way in using technology to keep us all safe.”

Inspector Rachel Gale, Allerdale Local Focus Team, said: “The Constabulary has worked with the Police and Crime Commissioner and local authorities to identify those areas where investment in CCTV infrastructure will best serve to protect communities from crime and anti-social behaviour.

“We are pleased to see more cameras introduced in Maryport. I am sure the new cameras will be effective in protecting local people and businesses.

“This partnership work will enhance the existing system and is part of our drive to develop community policing, along with the recruitment of additional officers to work in neighbourhoods throughout the county.”

Peter Kendall, Maryport Mayor comments: “It is crucial and inevitable that CCTV cameras are needed in Maryport. People have to feel safe and the installation of two additional cameras, taking the total up to three in the town, should reassure local people that the police are monitoring anti-social behaviour and its consequences.

“Law abiding citizens have absolutely nothing to fear, as the cameras are for there for the safety and well-being of local residents. It is vital that the public and citizens of Maryport feel safe in their own communities.”
