Demolition teams have descended upon Egremont today to demolish the former Red Lion Hotel. The dilapidated building has been the subject of negotiations for years, with improvement notices served upon the owner.
A section of the main street in front of the hotel has been a no-go area for the general public, with safety barriers erected.
Mike Starkie, Mayor of Copeland said:
"It is a momentous day for Egremont the demolition workers and bulldozers have arrived on site at the former Red Lion building.
"I am committed to tackling dilapidated buildings in all our towns, and the start of this work in Egremont is another huge step forward. It will bring significant benefits for everyone who loves the town.
