Furness Coastguard were paged at 0727 to reports of a vessel aground near Roosebeck.
A spokesperson said:
"Once on scene at the location where the vessel was reported, it became apparent that the vessel had either drifted back out into Morecambe Bay or further up the Coast.
"The team were tasked after someone had reported seeing the vessel aground via social media. The photo was passed to the team.
"The team recognised the vessel and checked where it is usually moored and reported back that it was still in its original place.
"The photo looks to have been photoshopped to looking like it had ran aground further up the coast with no warning on the post that it was doctored.
"We urge all, that any doctored photos uploaded have a disclaimer on, as this could have turned out into tasking other assets such as lifeboats and creating a risk to us as rescuers during these storms.
"Its better to be called when not needed, than be not called when we are. This was a false alarm with good intent.
