Marion Fitzgerald has resigned as leader of Allerdale Borough Council with immediate effect.
Councillor Mike Johnson, as deputy leader, will assume the responsibilities of the leader until a new leader is elected by Full Council.
In a short statement, Councillor Johnson and Acting Chief Executive Andrew Seekings said:
"We would like to thank Councillor Fitzgerald for the leadership, dedication, time and effort she has put into the role."
The council say that they will make no further comment.
