Man jailed for thefts and burglaries in Carlisle

A man who carried out a series of thefts and burglaries from businesses in Carlisle has been jailed for 31 weeks.

 37-year-old Lewis Brown of no fixed abode, appeared at Carlisle’s magistrates’ court yesterday (30th January).

He pleaded guilty to six charges, including two commercial burglaries, one attempted burglary, one theft and two shoplifting incidents, which all took place between 20th-29th January (2020).

On 20th January Brown entered Sainsbury’s supermarket on Church Street, Carlisle, where he stole £43 worth of meat products. He was identified by CCTV.

 On 23rd January Brown entered the Tesco store on the viaduct where he stole in excess of £34 worth of items including whiskey and underwear. He was identified on CCTV.

On 27th January Brown entered Carlisle Cathedral and forced open a charity box where he stole £60-£100. He was identified by his fingerprints.

Brown forced entry to a business on Chapel Street, Carlisle and stole £490 worth of takings. He was identified by his fingerprints.

On 29th January Brown attempted to gain entry to HMV in The Lanes shopping centre, Carlisle at 3.20am by repeatedly throwing a large rock at the window causing damage.

On 29th January Brown entered the post office on Scotch Street, Carlisle and stole £1,175 worth of coins and £52 worth of scratch cards. He was identified from CCTV.

Detective Constable Sarah Butterworth said: “Local, independently run businesses were targeted in Lewis Browns campaign of acquisitive crime and the impact that this has had on the community in Carlisle is something that we take very seriously.

We are happy that the courts have dealt with this so soon after the crimes happened”.
