At approximately 22.15pm, appliances from Carlisle East and Carlisle West, were mobilised to reports of a property fire on Cant Crescent, Carlisle.
On arrival, crews were faced with a significant bedroom fire in a downstairs flat.
A spokesperson from Cumbria Fire and Rescue said:
"Thankfully some passers by had heard the smoke alarms sounding, and had rescued the occupant before our arrival.
"Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the blaze using one hosereel, a thermal imaging camera, small tools, and a positive pressure ventilation fan.
"Crews then administered oxygen therapy to the casualty until the arrival of an ambulance."
