Agencies across Cumbria support National Adult Safeguarding Week

Safeguarding week 2019.pngSafeguarding agencies across Cumbria will be supporting a national campaign designed to raise awareness of services available to vulnerable adults.

National Adult Safeguarding Week takes place between 18th and 24th November. Cumbria Safeguarding Adults Board will be supporting the Ann Craft Trust in raising awareness of services available to those suffering abuse.

The board will be promoting the work conducted by agencies to minimise the risk of various types of abuse occurring to adults across the county. The topics, which are set to be covered, are:

  • modern slavery
  • domestic abuse
  • self-neglect
  • transforming care
  • safeguarding adults in sport and activity

Jeanette McDiarmid, the independent chair of Cumbria Safeguarding Adults Board, said:

“This campaign provides Cumbria Safeguarding Adults Board and it’s associated agencies with an opportunity to promote the important work of protecting people with care and support needs across Cumbria.

“Abuse and neglect takes many forms, therefore it is crucial to identify victims and those who may be at risk so agencies can provide them with the support they need. Throughout the week, we will be communicating the signs of abuse so the public can identify whether they or someone they know may be at risk or suffering.

“Safeguarding is a key priority for all agencies connected to Cumbria Safeguarding Adults Board. It is by working closely together with Cumbrian communities that we can reduce the risk of harm to vulnerable adults.

“Communication is key to achieving our aim of protecting people in Cumbria. The board regularly circulates newsletters by email, which focus on specific safeguarding topics. Throughout the campaign week, we will issue daily communication providing advice on what to do if you are suffering from a particular form of abuse or if you have concerns for someone you know. I’d encourage everyone to sign up to receive our newsletters so we can all do our bit to help protect people with care and support needs across Cumbria.”

The agencies involved in the campaign are Cumbria Constabulary, North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, North Cumbria Clinical Commissioning Group, University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay Clinical Commissioning Group Trust, Active Cumbria and Cumbria County Council.
