Howgill Family Centre Lose County Council Contract

In January 2020, national charity called Family Action will begin to provide family services in the area, having been awarded the contract by Cumbria County Council. Howgill Family Centre will therefore no longer provide the service. A spokesperson from Howgill said:
We would like to thank all the people of Copeland, volunteers and staff and partner organisations who have supported us tirelessly over the last 40 years. All services except the nurseries will be impacted by this decision unfortunately.
  • Howgill Family Centre began providing services to the area in 1977 when the Wyndham House Nursery School in Whitehaven had run into financial difficulties. Save the Children agreed to fund the project for a period of two years, 1978-1980 and a community worker was appointed. Following this, the organization has grown and progressed out of all recognition.
The decision by Cumbria County Council to award the contract  to Family Action has resulted in a number of people taking to social media to voice their concern, and to praise the Howgill Centre for their work over the years:
Hannah Pears: Oh I'm so devastated for you guys! We LOVE howgill and all the wonderful services it has provided to us since Alba was born. I can't believe it! What a stupid decision from CCC. I feel so sad about it.
Joanne Hill: Such a shame. Why do the powers that be feel the need to try and fix something that was clearly not broken. I have this before and I'll say it again .. the work Howgill do should be used a model for other towns, they work tirelessly to provide valuable services to so many families. I have signposted families to Howgill on many occasions , Karl kindly came along to Shout parent support group even though we weren't in his catchment area. I'm gutted for you all. A bad move by CCC.
Shaun Sandham: A bad decision by CCC. Howgill delivered excellent service for years.
