Engineering works on A685 near Grayrigg, Kendal

Work will start on Wednesday 11 September on the next phase of major engineering works to repair storm damage and strengthen flood resilience on a section of the A685 near Grayrigg, Kendal.

Cumbria County Council is investing approximately £650,000 in the surfacing and drainage works as part of the council’s Infrastructure Recovery Programme.

The next phase of the project will see the installation of 180 metres of kerb-drains and two gullies to capture rainwater on the carriageway and pipe down a slope to the adjacent Thursgill Beck. These works will ensure the slope does not become saturated and prevent future failure of the slope. New kerbs will also be installed along the edge of the road to the slope and a new road surface will be laid.

The county council had intended to introduce a full road closure while these works were carried out.

In order to avoid the disruption and inconvenience of a full road closure to the local community and travelling public, however, the council now plans to carry out the works under traffic management to ensure the A685 will remain open for peak periods of the day.

From Monday to Friday there will be no access through this section of the A685 to traffic between the hours of 09.30hrs to 15.00hrs. Outside of these hours, vehicular access will be available under two-way traffic lights, including weekends.

The works are expected to take approximately five weeks to complete.

Cllr Keith Little, Cumbria County Council Cabinet member for Highways and Transport, said: “These works to the road drainage and adjacent slope are critical to maintain connections on this section of the A685. The council has listened to local concerns about the planned full road closure and so to minimise the impact the road will now remain open for the busy rush hour periods of the day.We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you in advance for your patience whilst we complete these important works.”

Cllr Stan Collins, Local Member for Upper Kent, said: I’m very pleased and relieved that the county council’s engineers have found a way to keep this vital link open albeit on a restricted basis. The works are essential but a total closure would have meant great inconvenience for the people of Grayrigg and Lambrigg as well as Tebay.”
