Britain At Low Tide, CH4

Tune into Channel 4, Series 3, episode 3 on Saturday at 8pm to learn about the Solway Firth at low tide.

Dr Tori Herridge and the team tell the story of a tragic mining disaster that took place four miles out to sea, and find a huge oval-shaped swimming pool of hf the coast.

On May 11, 1910, at Wellington Pit, in Whitehaven, some 136 men and boys were to lose their lives in, or as a consequence, of an explosion.

It was caused by the miner’s great enemy: firedamp – methane. A highly volatile gas that can travel great distances. A naked flame or a simple spark is all it took to trigger the blast.
